I have always wanted write a full blown fantasy story and the other day I got the first glimpse of some of the characters and setting for this story.
I believe that the most important thing before writing any story is knowing the setting. For example if I was to write a story about being an orphan living on the streets of Cuba I would probably fail dismally because I am not an orphan nor have i ever even met one and I know next to nothing about Cuba. The nice thing about writing fantasy is that all the research you will ever need to do is already right there in your head, all you need to do is spend a little time sorting out the details you need.
Anyway the world that I discovered is called Thamatia. Everything that I need to know about it will hopefully be here in this folder for anyone to see and provide opinions on. Below is the introduction to Thamatia. I will post more as soon as i record it.

Thamatia is a world populated by various fantastical races. It was once rich in magic in a time known as "Ergrem" (Alti for the state of flourishing) but after an event a thousand years ago know only as "the barring" it has been in a state of Eskah (emptiness). A time will come when magic returns to Thamatia preceded by Etram (the sprouting) when a rift will open for only a few minutes and those in a certain radius will be magically charged.
This is a short introduction to the conceptual records of Thamatia - A fantasy world I have discovered in my head an intend to write a story about.

Hi Rawrz,
I agree totally with your conclusion as to writing about 'things one knows not a lot of', which is why none of my fantasies involve army-life, pirating etc, as I know nothing apart from what I've read and seen in movies and the news. However, even writing fantasy, one has to be careful to stick to the basic rules - physical, chemical, astronomical laws must be obeyed - it's fine to have a floating city held up by 'some sort of field generated by the engineering wallahs', but if you tell me the formula for sulfuric acid is P9gy67, then your book is going straight in the rubbish bin - I actually read this many years ago in a published SF novel - as an industrial chemist, I was horrified - not just because of the silliness, but because the author couldn't be bothered to do the ten minutes worth (pre-computer) of research that it would have taken to get the right formula!
